There is a real buzz at the moment about mindfulness based interventions. Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT) has proved to be particularly effective and recent academic developments have also focused attention on its usefulness in managing many common child and adolescent concerns.
Originating from eastern philosophies, mindfulness has developed into a credible, mainstream, evidence based way of assisting people to realign their unhelpful thinking and behaviour. Mindfulness focuses on slowing down and becoming deliberate in your day to day actions and thoughts, thus bringing an increased awareness of the external environment and to the internal experience of the body and mind. It allows thoughts and feelings to be observed from a distance, without misinterpretation. Mindfulness helps people to step out of their conditioning and see issues such as anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, self acceptance, and emotional trauma from a clearer perspective.
In this workshop Dr Angela Morgan will explore the practical application of mindfulness interventions. Participants will immediately be able to apply these skills in their work with clients from across the lifespan. Some of the specific content Angela will discuss includes:
- An overview of mindfulness and acceptance based ideology
- The core components necessary for successful mindfulness-based interventions
- Practical and effective mindfulness activities that help clients become more mindful, developing greater confidence, emotional regulation and personal insight
- How mindfulness can be incorporated as part of other intervention approaches to enhance existing intervention and management plans
- Designing homework mindfulness exercises, and assisting clients/helpers/carers/parents to facilitate mindfulness between sessions.
- There will also be a more specific focus on the application of mindfulness for anxiety, one of the most prevalent mental health issues in both children and adults.
