Much of what we think we knew about the development of the human brain has been eclipsed by recent scientific and neurological discoveries. These new understandings mean that we need to rethink many of the ways we have traditionally responded to the main developmental stages and developmental disorders that occur between birth and early adulthood. Over two days Nathan will discuss the implications of this research for best practice across a range of practice domains.
This two day intensive is being offered in response to the large number of customer requests we have received to hear more from Nathan following the success of his recent one day seminar series around the country. Nathan will further develop the material covered in the one day presentation and introduce new content with a focus on delegate participation and reflection.
Some of the specific areas he will cover include:
- The brain in the first 2 years: including neuro sequential models, cortisol research, left brain right brain functioning, gender differences, brain pathway pruning, the essential functions of the pre fontal cortex and an overview of cultural perspectives of brain functioning.
- The child and adolescent brain: including a review of new discoveries on the effects of nutrition, drugs and various other lifestyle factors on brain development and functioning. What approaches and interventions work best from a neuro science perspective and how we can guide behaviour change in a way that acknowledges and utilises the unique workings of the developing brain.
- Latest brain research perspectives on ADD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia including an exploration of historical contexts, comparative brain scans, functional differences, case study examples and how all of this can better inform our practice in these areas.
- The movement brain: How the development of frontal cortex functions such as literacy and numeracy are interconnected with the development of movement, coordination and balance.
This is an interactive, skills focused workshop that will provide opportunities for delegates to reflect on their own clients and experiences. Attendance at the earlier one day workshop is not a prerequisite.
Nathan Mikaere-Wallis has a master’s degree in Educational psychology and a practice background in teaching and child therapy. Nathan is a trustee for the Brainwave Trust and is a sought after trainer in the area of neuro-science research and its implications for practice. He runs a successful training consultancy specialising in this field. Nathan’s vast knowledge in this area when combined with his interactive and engaging teaching style and thoughtful use of case study material means that this seminar will be of interest to anyone who works with, teaches, or supports children and adolescents as part of their work.
